Fairview's wooded lots bring dirt inside

Fairview seasons change what needs cleaning

It settles on window sills and ceiling fan blades, and it sticks to glass. If you only get the windows washed once a year, do it after the pollen is done falling, inside and out.

Summer here is hot and sticky, and a house under a thick stand of trees stays damp longer than one out in the open. That shows up in the bathroom first. Mildew starts on the grout and along the caulk around the tub, and a basement or a closed-up spare room starts to smell stale. Keeping up with it on a regular schedule is much easier than scrubbing out a summer's worth of it in September.

Fall on a wooded lot means leaves, and bits of them ride in on shoes and pets until the last ones come down. Winter is wet, so the clay at the back door is at its worst. Houses that burn wood in a fireplace or a stove also get a fine gray ash on the shelves and furniture near it.
