Engine detailing starts with a cool engine

Engine detailing is a cleaning job under the hood, and it runs in a set order. The engine has to be cool first, because cleaner sprayed on hot metal dries before it can work and leaves streaks behind. While it cools, we pull out the leaves and loose trash that collect under the windshield and around the battery. Then we cover the parts that should stay dry before any water goes on.

Some parts should never get wet. On most engines that means the air intake, the fuse box, open wire plugs and the alternator, and each one gets covered in plastic. Next a degreaser goes on the dirty spots and soaks for a few minutes. Soft brushes then work the grime loose between hoses and brackets. The rinse is light. A pressure washer aimed into an engine bay can force water into wire plugs, so we do not use one under the hood.

Done right, the engine bay looks even and clean, and the plastic covers go from dusty gray back to black. Before the hood comes down, everything is dried with towels, including the low spots around the spark plugs where water collects. Water left in those spots can make a car run rough the next morning. Too much shine is its own mistake. A greasy coat on the plastic catches dust and looks worse inside a week.

Nashville weather fills engine bays with grime

Spring around Nashville coats everything in yellow pollen, and an engine bay pulls in more than its share. The fan draws air through the grille and across the engine, so the pollen lands on warm, slightly oily surfaces and sticks. Add the humid air and it turns into a film you cannot wipe off with a dry rag. By summer that film has baked on, and the engine looks dull brown instead of black and silver.

Fall brings leaves. They drop into the gap at the base of the windshield and slide down near the battery. There they sit wet and rot. A car parked under the big old trees in Belle Meade or Forest Hills collects a pile of them in one season. Winter adds the salt brine sprayed on the interstates before ice, and tires throw it up into the engine bay, where it rusts bare metal.

Summer heat does the rest. Long waits in Nashville traffic keep the engine hot while the fan pulls in dusty air. Any small seep of oil catches that dust and turns into a black crust. Oil left sitting on rubber hoses softens them over time. The crust also hides the thing you most want to see, which is where a leak starts. So an engine here needs cleaning more often than one in a cooler, drier place.

Where you park changes what we find

We come to your home or job, so we see where the car spends its nights. Take a car kept in the garage of a brick house in a Brentwood or Franklin subdivision. It usually has a light coat of dust under the hood and not much more. Those jobs go quickly. Most of the time goes into the corners the fan never reaches, down low beside the engine and behind the battery.

Cars parked outside have it harder. The older parts of Nashville are streets of bungalows and brick ranch houses under big trees. Many of those homes have short driveways or a carport, so cars sit outside all year. Leaves and seeds work their way under the hood. In the cold months, mice sometimes build nests on top of a warm engine. If we find chewed wiring, we show it to you, because that is a job for a mechanic.

At an apartment complex or an office lot, the car usually sits in full sun all day. The sun bakes the dirt on harder than a garage ever would. Those engines need a longer soak before the brushes go in, and sometimes a second pass on the worst spots. It is still the same job in the same order, with more patience on the dirty parts.

A clean engine bay shows leaks early

The most useful thing about a clean engine is what it lets you see. On a dirty engine, an oil leak blends into the old grime and nobody notices until there is a spot on the driveway. On a clean one, a fresh wet line of oil or coolant stands out the first time you lift the hood. You can point your mechanic straight at it, and you catch the repair while it is still small.

People buying a used car open the hood, usually before they even start it. A crusted engine makes them wonder what else was skipped, and that can pull the offer down. A clean bay with no fresh oil on it says the car was looked after. One customer wrote on Google that their car was "spotless and ready for the auction stage". That is the goal before any sale.

We clean engines. We do not repair them. A cleaning will not stop a leak or fix a worn belt, and shine will not hide a problem from a good mechanic. What it gives you is a clear look at the engine you actually have. If we spot a cracked hose or white crust on a battery post while we work, you hear about it before we leave.
