Older homes near the square take longer

Springfield grew out from the courthouse square, and the streets closest to it still have a good number of older houses. Many have tall windows and a lot of painted trim. That is a big part of their charm. It is also why cleaning one takes longer than cleaning a newer house. Every window sill and stair spindle is a ledge where dust lands and stays.

A lot of these older homes have real hardwood floors with small gaps between the boards. Grit works down into those gaps and gets ground in each time someone walks across the room. Clay mud and field dust come inside

Springfield sits in farm country, and the soil around town carries a lot of clay. After a wet week, that clay sticks to boots and dog paws and ends up on your floors. It dries into a fine reddish dust that sinks into carpet and grout lines. Wiping it while it is wet only smears it around. The better move is to let it dry and vacuum it out first. Then only the stain underneath is left to clean.

Left alone, the spots turn from gray to black and set into the caulk itself. On a deep clean we scrub the grout lines and the tub edge. If the caulk is stained all the way through, we tell you. At that point it needs replacing, and no amount of cleaning will fix it.
